Fitness - Week 8

The 8th lesson in Physical Education focused on fitness.

The definition of FITNESS is the quality of being suitable to fulfil a particular role or task.
The components of health related or skill related do not include flexibility.

Health is the social, metal-emotional and physical wellbeing of a person.

When we compare ourselves against athletes fitness is relative to the task, to the person.

Skill related fitness - tasks
Health related fitness - how many tasks or jobs at hand.

Factors affecting fitness:


  • Poor Nutrition
  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress/Anxiety
  • Excessive smoking
  • Excessive Alcohol
  • Excessive use of drugs
Somatyping is the categorisation of body types into: Ectomorphs, Endomorphs, Mesomorphs.
All systems work together Cardio-Vascular, Cardio-respiratory, Muscular Skeletal, Digestive, Nervous.


Practical Lesson:

Working in groups of 4 to demonstrate in 4 different balances.

  1. Holding wrists squatting in chair balance
  2. Hands and feet support balance
  3. Wheel barrow walk in pairs
  4. Counter balance leaning back in pairs.
This was a challenging exercise especially using a larger group to balance, in our group we had mixed somatypes.

Locomotor, Non-locomotor, Manipulative Movements - Week 2

The second lesson included categories of Locomotor , Non-locomotor and Manipulative movements also known as  Fundamental Motor Skills (FMS) are movements with specific observable patterns and Concepts of Movements: Space Awareness , Body Awareness , Relationship , Effort and Quality . The main concept of this class was to recognise that there is no movement without space, identifying spatial awareness and using effort fuelled by the digestive system. The definitions these categories of movements will be highlighted. Locomotor movements involve a person moving from on point to another. e.g. running, hopping, leaping. Non-locomotor movements are done whilst a person is in a stationary position which requires the person to move in planes, axles, or the waistline or from the joints. e.g. twisting, bending. Manipulative skills are gross or fine motor skills which involve using the hands, feet or another body parts to manipulate or control an object. e.g. throwing, catching.
