Lesson Planning (Part 2) - Week 5

The Fifth lesson in Physical Education was a continuation of lesson planning of the previous class.

The lesson plan was detailed to include 3 major categories:

Movement Experience:
  • Introductory/Warm-up Activity - to avoid cramps and injury
  • Skill Development - progression linkages 1) simple to complex 2) Individual > Pair > Group
  • Skill Application
  • Closure
Organization:
  • Groups of certain numbers
  • Specific instruction for activity
  • Space
  • Equipment
  • Progression - Individuals, Pairs, Group activities.
Teaching Points and Cues:
  • Teacher has specific rules for activity
  • Teacher give specific instruction to do skill or technique
  • Use of Space

Practical Lesson:

The practical aspect of this lesson focused on: Bases, Shapes, Mirroring, Matching, Transitions.

Bases which were any parts of the body in contact with the floor to provide stability - hands, feet, back, knees, torso, tail bone.
Wide bases with feet placed wide apart - large space between them.

Shapes using the arms, legs and joints - wide shapes and small shapes. Bending joints and keeping them straight. Using This topic of shapes to teach asymmetrical and symmetrical shapes in Mathematics. Where the shape is asymmetrical the body is unbalanced and where the shape is symmetrical the body is balanced.

Pairs working together to mirror each other and match each others movements. It was easy to mistake the terms and use them interchangeably.

Small groups were chosen and 3 transitions of a sequence of the body using bases and shapes.
  1. Base on the tail-bone legs in the air
  2. Base on back into legs in air
  3. Roll over to torso base holding ankles
This practical session required a lot of thinking and performing the bases and shapes in order to be creative in the higher level.

Locomotor, Non-locomotor, Manipulative Movements - Week 2

The second lesson included categories of Locomotor , Non-locomotor and Manipulative movements also known as  Fundamental Motor Skills (FMS) are movements with specific observable patterns and Concepts of Movements: Space Awareness , Body Awareness , Relationship , Effort and Quality . The main concept of this class was to recognise that there is no movement without space, identifying spatial awareness and using effort fuelled by the digestive system. The definitions these categories of movements will be highlighted. Locomotor movements involve a person moving from on point to another. e.g. running, hopping, leaping. Non-locomotor movements are done whilst a person is in a stationary position which requires the person to move in planes, axles, or the waistline or from the joints. e.g. twisting, bending. Manipulative skills are gross or fine motor skills which involve using the hands, feet or another body parts to manipulate or control an object. e.g. throwing, catchi...

Personal Reflection - Week 10

This course in Physical Education has highlighted some interesting aspects when teaching PE, understanding your teaching content and students. Each lesson has provided a thorough and invaluable guide on how to understand the students you are working with and how to create a lesson with ease. Personally I have learnt that filling a lesson with many objectives and only achieving one or two is highly frustrating especially when teaching children. Not only does the teacher have to deliver a meaningful lesson, but maintain motivation, class management and organisation skills and adhere to the structure of the lesson plan.  A lesson requires time to think through and it does not stop there. The lesson on paper in theory may not work in practice so it is paramount for the teacher to perform the lesson themselves to a degree to gauge the timing of the lesson, structure, the feasibility and general content of the pedagogy. The teacher must be mindful of his/her students, the ...
